National 4-H Week is Here! October 3-9

The theme this year is again "Are You Into It?" To keep a strong, viable countywide 4-H each club needs to do their part. Some ideas to promote 4-H are:

Write articles about your club, members, projects, and events to newspapers, radio, cable T.V., and newsletters.
Do an exhibit, bulletin board, speech, poster, or article for schools, libraries, community centers, churches, businesses, stores, restaurants, and volunteer organizations.
Get your mayor to sign a 4-H Week proclamation for your community.
Don't forget to compete for an award and do a window display advertising National 4-H Week. Notify the 4-H office by Tuesday, October 5th of the location in order to be judged.(This counts as an affirmative action contact.)

Colusa County 4-H Welcomes New Members!

Clubs are still enrolling new members through this month. During this time as you are getting settled, the two best resources of information in your club are your project leaders and your Key Leader. Your Key Leader can provide you with information about any special club requirements, requirements that are county wide and special requirements for showing at the fair. Project Leaders can tell you what you need to do to get credit in your project. Make sure to ask about the following: A) Record Books B)County Activities and C)Attendance requirements.

The Colusa County 4-H News is a monthly newsletter that provides information about upcoming events, event planning meetings and trainings. You should be receiving the Colusa County 4-H News the month following joining. If you do not receive the newsletter first check with your Key Leader for the progress of your enrollment. You are also welcome to call the 4-H Office, University of California Cooperative Extension,(458-0570), to see if we have missed you on our mailing list. 4-H is "Making the Best Better", in a FUN WAY!

Reminder

ALL ENROLLMENT FORMS AND FEES ARE TO BE TURNED INTO YOUR KEY LEADER.

The 4-H office will not accept them from individuals. Key Leaders, please turn in club enrollment with one check for all fees collected by NOVEMBER 1st. Club enrollment forms and fees will be accepted after each club meeting from key leaders if they are complete. Remember to record Affirmative Action contacts.

County-Wide Projects

There are some opportunities for projects beyond what is offered in your local club. These are known as county-wide or cross-county projects. Sign up on your club enrollment form as you do for all other projects. If you have questions call the project leader at the phone number listed:

Taxidermy: Rick Richter, 438-2593. Meets one day only, a Saturday in January at Maxwell Elementary.
Small Engines: Cindy Rohde, 473-2461. Meets at Pierce High School Shop. Limit: 8.
Able Riders: David/Karyn Burgess, 476-2106. Temporarily suspended until new horse is acquired.
Horse: Terri Swiggum, 458-2199. Meets at Swiggum residence, Colusa.
Guide Dog Puppies: (cross-county project) Meets in Sutter or Yolo Counties. Call 4-H Office for more information.

Hear Ye! Hear Ye!

Club reporters, project members, and leaders...Everyone is invited to write articles for your countywide 4-H Newsletter. We'd like to hear what your club and project groups are doing. Write us, fax us, call us, e-mail us, or just drop by. We'll take news anyway we can get it. Just get it to us by the 15th of the month!

Emerald Star

Colusa County has a star rank for members who have achieved their gold star rank and are looking for new challenges.

The Emerald Star is awarded for carrying out an approved plan of leadership in the 4-H program. Members write a plan, submit it for approval, and fulfill requirements on the Personal Development Report(PDR).

The plan may be for an event you initiate, a community activity that fills a need and involves 4-H members or the development of audio visual and/or teaching aids to enhance a project.

To apply, a member must be in 8th grade or above, hold a gold star rank, present the plan, be prepared to handle any financial costs to complete the project,or have club or council approval for spending their funds, and fulfill PDR requirements for the Emerald Star. Plans are due November 1st to the 4-H Office. Call or stop by for more information and plan forms.

State Leaders' Forum

All project leaders are invited to the State Leaders' Forum at beautiful seaside Asilomar near Monterey. To be held Nov. 5-7. Registration was due in Sept. so add a $10.00 late fee. Lots of great ideas. Council has sponsored leaders in the past and will again if you're interested. Call 458-0570 for more information.

Project Proficiencies

Project proficiencies are available for the following projects:

Animal Science
Camping and Outdoor Science
Clothing and Textiles
Creative Arts and Crafts
Foods and Nutrition
Leadership
Plant Science

They are designed to serve as a working checklist and reward system. Members track where they are in their project knowledge and skills are rewarded at the time. Skills are identified that are to be accomplished in order to earn medals in each of 5 levels of competency in the project. This recognition is available for every member (Danish system of merit), based on self achievements and NOT in competition with others. In addition, the proficiencies can act as a leader's guide for what to teach in the project.

Community Service

This time of year 4-Hers look for community service/community pride ideas for their individual, group, or club projects. The 4-H Office suggests the following:

Start a garden. Set aside a few rows whose produce is given to the needy.

Make quilts or toys to give to the local law enforcement or child services agency.

Help an elderly neighbor with yard work or fix-it chores.

Remember community service is helping without be paid. It's good for all your own personal four H's: Head, Heart, Hands, and Health, especially Heart.

New Council Officers

Congratulations to the newly elected Colusa County 4-H Council Officers:

President Cindy Pearson, Maxwell 4-H,

Cooperative Extension Office by calling 865-1107 or by email: mrhorney@ucdavis.edu

Club Officer Training

Saturday, September 11th Club Officers from Arbuckle, Maxwell, Princeton, and Stonyford gathered at Atwood Hall for the Fourth Annual Colusa County Club Officer Training.

Arbuckle FFA's officers and their advisor, George Green guided the officers through exercises designed to inspire, train, and build teamwork. The most popular segment was the Team Building Activities using low risk Ropes Course strategies. Each team left the day with plans for their club's year. Many thanks to the Arbuckle FFA officers and Mr. Green!

Advanced Dairy and Livestock Record Form

This publication is erroneously listed for $.50 in the 4-H Catalog. It should be available free to 4-H members and leaders. In the future you can order these at no cost through Communication Services in Oakland. Long term plans are to have these forms on the website ( some forms already are) as a pdf file which can be downloaded by staff, volunteers and youth.

Jr. Grand National

Now Available in the 4-H Office are Scholarship Application, Merit Award Application and Cow Town Council Application. For more information, contact the 4-H Office at 458-0570

Colusa 4-H Goat Group

The Colusa 4-H Goat Group has been invited back again to America's Family Pet Expo at Cal Expo on October 15-17, 1999. If you are interested in participating you need to be enrolled in 4-H before this event. We had a lot of fun last year teaching the public about goats. For more information you can call Bonny Martin at 458-8052.

Did You or Will You Ever?

Eat Tomatoes? Advances in biotechnology make it possible to actually insert new DNA in some plants, such as tomatoes, which make them immune to certain insect pests.

Leader Certification

All new leaders are to attend one of the following leader certifications:

Monday, October 18th, 7-9 p.m.
Tuesday, November 9th, 7-9 p.m.
Saturday, December 11th 9-11 am.

All three meetings are held in the CIP Conference Room. This certification is provided by the University of California Cooperative Extension staff to benefit both leaders and the overall 4-H program. It is a mandatory requirement for all leaders. If you have not been certified you must attend one of these meetings. All sessions will be the same. Once you attend, you need not attend another. It is not a yearly requirement.

If you enroll as an adult project leader, resource leader, transportation leader, key leader, etc. you must attend one of these meetings. Please do not put it off until the last meeting.
